ARTIST STATEMENT
The work is an exploration on the permanence of motherhood regardless of the child’s feelings. The child is expected to endure the relationship while ignoring the lack of shame in their mothers promised impossibilities. It is only when the vulnerability of youth no longer controls them, but instead creates a confrontation of failed motherhood, that they are forced to explore the simplicity of the abuse that caused their wounds.
The juxtaposition of masculine and feminine materials seen in my practice are carefully paired with a compositional nod to female anatomy. The work aims to command the space through the installation and creating an unknown of where the piece begins and ends. Choosing specific motifs for each piece creates a visual narrative that guides the audience through the conceptual installations. The conceptuality of the work ties to the confusion linked to trauma in parent-child dynamics while allowing for the materiality of the pieces to stand on their own.
The exploration of materiality creates an ongoing investigation of the work and develops an intimacy between the viewer, the maker, and the creation. Using specific motifs and visual schemes, the work creates visual narratives that invite viewers to confront the lasting impact of complex connections.
The installations challenge viewer to shift their focus from external battles to the internal struggle of preserving their own identity while acknowledging the impact of abuse. Through introspection and empathy, I have taken part in transformative exploration to these intricate relationships in a visually captivating and emotionally stirring experience. The driving force of continuing the work is experiencing closure through my practice while offering a space for others to have intentional conversations about emotionally charged relationships.
