Lily-Of-The-Valley Exhibition Statement

Lily-of-The-Valley is an immersive exhibition that delves into the intricate dynamics of strained parent-child relationships. Through conceptual installations, the exhibition explores complex emotions experienced by children, turned adults, as they overcome fear and confront past abuses. Using specific motifs and visual schemes, the exhibition compares the flower ‘lily-of-the-valley’ to the child’s experience with name association and the appearance of a mother. Traditional sculptural elements such as metal, plaster, and clay are intertwined with intentional ornaments like hosiery, cowrie shells, carnations, hair, and latex  to act as a representation of motherhood from the child’s perspective. The work explores the juxtaposition of a title that is traditionally associated with comfort and the reality of it exuding toxicity. As the installations consume the space, there is an entanglement of comfort and tension that aims to challenge the perception of identity and acknowledges the effect toxins have on the sense of self into adulthood.
